How to Earn on Upwork | How to Make Money on Upwork

Upwork is a great website that agrees to let writers and editors to connect online and create contracts in an exchange of services for pay. There are two types of memberships one can sign up for. The first, the Basic Plan, is free, giving you sixty connects per month to find your clients. The other, which is the Plus Plan, gives you seventy connects, along with the ability to apply for more as well as roll over ones that were not used during a previous month.

Once you decide which plan will work best for you, it is easy to get started. There are many tests and portfolio building applications one can use to set oneself up a professional freelancer. Though it is time consuming, be sure to complete and ace as many tests that prove your talent as possible. Think of your portfolio as a giant baseball card that’s about to be traded around. The ones with the best stats and overall demeanor are the ones that will stay in rotation, while the ones that don’t have much to offer get tossed to the wayside.  Grammar, spelling, and format are (obviously) crucial in this line of work. If you’re not sure of your abilities, there are many free applications online that can be used as back up.

There are many different types of jobs one can take on Upwork, so go to the jobs you know you can excel at the most, especially when first starting out. Bad reviews can make or break you as a freelancer on this site, so it is important in the beginning to take jobs you know for certain you can exceed at so your clients will leave stellar reviews about your quality of work.  That being said, be honest about your skills as a freelancer. The worst thing you can do is land a job that is way too big for you or out of your realm of comprehension. It will only set you up for failure.

Also, when discussing projects and contract negotiations, be wary of those that do not want to use the website to exchange services for pay. The website cannot protect you if you agree to take a job outside of it. Though the website does take a small fee for their services, it is better than not getting paid at all for your hard work.

Finally, learn what kind of schedule will work best for you. When first getting started and working with your connects, it is easy to feel a rush of triumph when the jobs you applied for pick you to go into negotiations with. Be sure to keep a visual schedule of which project is due when so that one does not get mixed up with the other.

Upwork can be an excellent website to work with as a freelancer as long as you are honest about your skills and be careful with the clients you choose to work with. Don’t be afraid to talk to the other freelancers about which clients have been more reliable in the past. Good luck out there, and remember that honesty is the best policy!
